How to Choose the Right Type of PTFE Fabric or Tape

Choosing the right PTFE tape or fabric for your application can be tricky with so many options available. PTFE (commonly known as Teflon™) comes in several forms, each with unique properties. To help with that, we’ll break down each variation and explain when to use them.

Standard Grade vs Premium Grade

PTFE materials vary in quality, and not all of them offer the same performance. To make an informed choice, understanding the difference between standard grade and premium grade can help you choose the right option.

  • Standard Grade PTFE fabric or tape has a thinner PTFE coating and is well-suited for general-purpose applications. It offers a cost-effective, non-stick performance and high heat resistance. However, it may wear down faster under high-cycle or abrasive use.
  • Premium Grade PTFE fabric or tape features a thicker coating, offering improved durability in high-cycle or abrasive applications. It provides extended performance in demanding environments, such as medical manufacturing, food processing, and high-volume sealing operations.

Specialty Fabrics & Tapes

In some applications, you may need a specialty type of PTFE fabric or tape. For example, whether you’re dealing with abrasive materials, airflow requirements, or high-stress sealing environments, these specialty options are engineered for specific performance needs.

  • Reinforced PTFE fabric and tape are coated with a reinforced PTFE coating for enhanced durability and chemical resistance. This design offers superior abrasion resistance, making it ideal for demanding applications involving acids, liquids, or harsh chemicals, such as PVC window manufacturing or heat press sheets.
  • Textured PTFE fabric and tape feature a special weave that creates a raised, textured surface in 8 mil thickness. This enhanced texture provides a more defined seal line, along with improved strength and consistent sealing performance, qualities especially important in medical and pharmaceutical packaging.
  • Tear Resistant PTFE fabric is a built to withstand tearing, fraying, and creasing under stress. It offers reliable non-stick performance, heat resistance, and chemical durability, along with added flexibility. Applications for this material includes side sealing belts, end seal packaging for paper products, polyfilm bag production and mold release surfaces in aerospace.
  • Porous PTFE fabric is breathable and non-stick allow controlled airflow without sacrificing heat resistance or chemical durability. Its permeable structure makes it a reliable choice for vacuum lamination, composite curing, and use as a bleeder or release cloth in aerospace and industrial molding applications.

Silicone Adhesive vs Acrylic Adhesive

PTFE tapes are available in either silicone or acrylic adhesive. Learn which adhesive is better for heat, surface type, and long-term performance.

Silicone adhesive offers the following benefits:

  • Performs well in extreme temperatures, from −65 °F to 500°F
  • Excellent chemical resistance
  • Stable long-term bonding
  • Minimal residue

Example use: high-cycle, high-heat applications like impulse sealing

Acrylic adhesive offers the following benefits:

  • Performs well in moderate temperatures, -40°F to 275°F
  • Strong adhesion
  • Excellent UV or moisture resistance
  • Long-term aging stability
  • Cost-effective

Example use: moderate-heat, smooth-surface applications like packaging lines

PTFE Zone Tape

PTFE zone tapes are designed for impulse heat sealers, providing reliable non-stick performance with adhesive zones.

PTFE Zone Tape offer the following benefits:

  • Adhesive-free center zone prevents sticking to heat sealing elements
  • Can be tailored to fit specific machine requirements or sealing profiles
  • PTFE coating prevents melted plastics from sticking to the tape
